WHEREAS, the red wolf, Canis niger, of southcentral United States is truly an endangered species and is so designated by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service; and
WHEREAS, this unique animal has been the subject of relentless and often unjustified persecution; now
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the American Society of Mammalogists urges that federal and state support for control of this species be markedly reduced and that all predator control activities on federal and state lands which lie within the range of the red wolf be stopped at once; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that copies of this resolution be sent to the Governors of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas, to the Game and Fish Departments of these states, to the Secretaries of the Departments of Agriculture and the Interior, and to the Chief of the U. S. Forest Service.
