WHEREAS, the United States has for many years supported the U.S. Man and Biosphere Program (MAB), administered through the Department of State as a consortium of natural resource agencies and integrated with the MAB programs of other nations through the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO); and
WHEREAS, U.S. MAB has effectively applied the best basic science and technology to world problems of wildlife conservation and natural resource management; and
WHEREAS, the United States has announced its intention to withdraw its funding for UNESCO; and
WHEREAS, the U.S. MAB program will terminate on September 30, 1984, unless a secure new funding base is established; and
WHEREAS, no addition to the Department of State's FY 1985 budget for this purpose has been proposed by the Administration,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the American Society of Mammalogists supports an initiative in the United States Congress to provide a $2 million line item addition to the Department of State's FY 1985 budget for the U.S. Man and Biosphere Program.
