WHEREAS, the public is now becoming aware of the great need for educational systems, at all levels, to emphasize more emphatically and frequently Man's concern for his own environment, and
WHEREAS, schools, at all levels, are beginning to require some field-oriented environmental teaching, and
WHEREAS, "natural" or "semi-natural" areas of outdoor environment in close proximity to schools may be still present in some rural areas but certainly not in more populous sectors, and
WHEREAS, such environmental teaching areas, now being used but not under direct school control, may disappear in the wake of encroaching suburbia in five to twenty years down the road; now
THEREFORE, the members of the American Society of Mammalogists, in annual meeting assembled, this day and date set forth above, have voted as follows:
BE IT RESOLVED, that the American Society of Mammalogists urges officials of school systems at all levels to find the money to purchase or to find an interested person, civic club or group to donate a tract of land (preferably 100 acres or more) to be deeded in perpetuity as an Environmental Teaching Center and to be dedicated to the development of a better informed citizenry in the area served.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this resolution shall be furnished to the Superintendents of Public Instruction of each state and to the executive officers of national associations of junior colleges, colleges, and universities.
